South Australian Pharmacist of the Year 2009
Mr Irfan Hashmi
Mr Irfan Hashmi has been awarded the 2009 Pharmacist of the Year in South Australia and was presented with the award at an annual dinner hosted by the South Australia branch of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia on Saturday 22 August 2009. Both Mr Hashmi, and his wife Sobia, practised pharmacy in Pakistan before migrating to Australia. They then completed the APC examination process and now successfully operate four pharmacies in South Australia both in cities and rural environments.
Mr Hashmi has since trained three APC candidates and now employs two full time pharmacists who have also completed the APC process.

Mr Hashmi spoke positively of the encouragement and support given to him during the APC process by the APC members, Mr Peter Halstead and Mr Tim Gross, and also spoke highly of the encouragement given to him in opening a pharmacy in a rural environment in which there had been no previous pharmacy.
While it was sometimes difficult to study and travel long distances to work and, at the same time settle in a new country with a young family, Mr and Mrs Hashmi consider this period a great time in their life. They are both an inspiration to other APC candidates undertaking the examination process.
Mr Hashmi is the first APC candidate to achieve the SA Pharmacist of the Year award and the APC congratulates him and wishes both him and his wife every success in the future.

SCHOOLS IN AUSTRALIA, FEES, TERMS
Schooling types
In South Australia, children start their schooling between the ages of 4 and 5; they can leave at 16 (transferring to vocational study, apprenticeships or into the workplace) or stay on for a further two years study, usually in preparation for tertiary study.
There are three main types of education in South Australia:
Public schooling—public education is funded by the Australian Government and provides free tuition for all students. A compulsory school fee of around AU$223 is charged each year—but only to cover the cost of necessities such as libraries, sporting fees and books. Public schools offer innovative, advanced and diverse curricula—and most are co-educational.
- Catholic schooling—South Australia has a number of schools that are privately run and subsidised by the Catholic Education Office. To find out more, contact the SA Commission for Catholic Schools.

فرهاد ادامه می دهد: "یک بار به بیمارستان رفتم ، دیدم که پزشک ، یک فرد نیکوکاری را با تار به بیمارستان آورده تا برای پدرم موسیقی ایرانی بنوازد و او را از افسردگی درآورد. من واقعاً نمی دانستم که چگونه از او تشکر کنم. باید بگویم که در این مدت ۱۰ سال دولت استرالیا کمک های شایانی به ما کرد و من از خدا سپاسگزارم که این موهبت را نصیبم کرد که تا آخر عمر در کنار پدرم باشم و او با منزلت و مقام از دنیا برود."

What happens when my Australian permanent visa is granted?
The visa will permit you unlimited travel and entry to Australia for five years from date of grant, and indefinite stay on your arrival provided entry is made before the expiry date. Where you travel overseas and return to Australia after the specified date, you will need to obtain a five-year Resident Return Visa (RRV) to renew your permanent residence.
To renew your permanent residency, you must have been lawfully present in Australia for a period of, or periods that total, not less than two years in the period of five years immediately before the application for the RRV and, during that time, you must have been the holder of a permanent visa. Limited exceptions to the two-year rule apply.

How do I become an Australian Citizen?
You may become a citizen of Australia in one of three possible ways. These are:
By birth: In Australia people automatically become an Australian citizen if they are born here and one or both of their parents is an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia.
By descent: If you are the child of an Australian citizen but you are born overseas you will generally be granted Australian citizenship. There are a number of rules that might apply to people in this category. These are indicated in the Australian Citizenship Act, 2007.
By grant: If you are a non-citizen of Australia you can apply to become an Australian citizen. You must meet several requirements, which generally are that you: 
- Are an Australian permanent resident
- Are over 16 years of age

- Are of good character
- Have a knowledge of basic English
- Have an adequate knowledge of your responsibilities and privileges as a citizen
